Pilot Ground School Day 5 ~ Flying Adventure

Jim made Class 5 pumped up by starting it off with a strong pot of coffee!

He ran through Chapter 3 on Aerodynamics of Flight. Aerodynamic.. it is as badass as it sounds:) Covered topics including types of climb, climb performance, absolute ceiling, Vx Max angle climb - max gradient, Vy Mac rate of climb - best vertical speed, cruise climb, turning and load factor.. chapter has a bunch of info on stalls, spins (noooo thank you ~ keep coordinated & you won't spin),

Then we just started to get into Chapteer 12 ~ The Human in the Cockpit. Bottom line ~ be healthy!! I like this chapter bc it has a biology vibe to it talking about the body, effects of altitude on the body, hypoxia ~ anoxia, anaemic hypoxia... You want none of them. Effects of increasing cabin altitude on various parts of the body like stomach, intestines, sinuses, middle ear or even in a decaying tooth (gross!!!) will want to expand as external pressure decreases! This can cause barotrauma ~ yah would like that Never!! Interesting... Pain ~ if any ~ would be most severe in ascent for teeth & intestines & on descent with ears & sinus.

Yes my immature streak caused me to laugh when I read that you should stay clear when flying of legumes & leafy greens known to produce gas... Noted!

Interesting mention... If you scuba be aware....rules regarding scuba diving & flying vary slightly from country to country. Current Diver's Alert Network's recommendation is that you do not fly for 12 hours after any single dive without decompression stops. There's a note to not fly within 24 hours of scuba diving. Had no idea... Though I don't anticipate scuba diving. Snorkeling in Hawaii after seeing my friend Adam's recent pics... an absolute Yes someday soon!:)

All kinds of rules. As a general rule, a pilot must not fly for at least 8 hours after drinking small quantities of alcohol & increase this time if greater quantities are consumed. Sleep does not diminish the alcohol... actually it slows the body processes down & elimination of alcohol may take longer. Exercise is better (visualize that?!) & having coffee, soup or water only helps if taken instead of alcohol. All in all, i wont be freaking drinking any alcohol anytime near when I fly.. No less than 8 hours prior.. But likely well beyond 8 hours. Good thing is I rarely drink anymore anyways so Check!

Blind spots visual in the book was interesting. Covering my right eye & bringing in the image.. The helicopter did disappear. My flight instructor Jim is Always looking out for traffic.. Great example to always keep alert & keep eyes out!

Ok, that was a lot of verbiage, but good stuff!! Looking forward to re-reading, increasing my knowledge & more FLYING!:)

Now a few pics from Class 5 & two pics from Flying Wild Alaska I thought were cool.. Think it's totally neat & interesting hearing that show talk about things I'm learning in ground school.

Balance of forces.. the Center of Gravity symbol reminds me of hazardous material symbol
Yah, no loopage for me!

Do not underestimate the power of the Force

Max angle of climb, Max rate of climb, Cruise climb

Effect of Wind.. know your Sock!

Spins.. Yah, never please. Keep the plane coordinated.. no spinage.
Big takeaway here.. NO FLYING IN CLOUDS Yo!

Moving on to Chapter 12 - Info on the Human .. the Soul of the Plane!
All kinds of effects of altitude on the body.
Giggles instigator.. notage about avoiding legumes and leafy greens before flying.
Love this sight after class... look at these guys.. just waiting to go back up:)
Interesting visual on Flying Wild Alaska... effects of hot and cold air = CRAZY TURBULENCE
Another cool visual of the mixing airflow - hot and cold.
